Chartwell Road Portraits

Ongoing portrait series documenting domestic workers in South Africa.  Unemployment in South Africa is catastrophically high which results in domestic workers earning little more than poverty wages.   Working conditions are poor with long hours and longer commutes.  As child of white privilege I’m embarrassed to say that I only learnt to fully appreciate this when I moved to the UK and found myself cleaning my own toilet for the first time.  Today as a mother of three with little affordable domestic help or childcare in the UK, I often think of the strong, wonderful Zulu woman who raised me and the sacrifices she made to do so.

I hope to highlight this inequality in this series, and shine a light on the people who are the unrecognised backbone of the South African economy.
